Katie, I just found this site earlier today. It gives directions for a very basic garter stitch or stockinette triangle shawl, BUT then she goes on to explain how to spice it up with some simple lace inserts. Perhaps it will help.

hmmm. yeah the garter or stst is too simple, but i don't know if i could correctly set it up for a lace pattern. i'll have to look at it more carefully later.
