in the interest of fairness... i am already considering nicole's feather and fan pattern..... if i choose that, i will give her a prize since i (ack) committed myself publicly.

but my mind is NOT made up, and i will consider all other offers!!! i will do either a rectangular or triangular shawl, but i want more of a pattern than a triange increase every end of the row SS or garter stitch.

Katie, I just found this site earlier today. It gives directions for a very basic garter stitch or stockinette triangle shawl, BUT then she goes on to explain how to spice it up with some simple lace inserts. Perhaps it will help.

hmmm. yeah the garter or stst is too simple, but i don't know if i could correctly set it up for a lace pattern. i'll have to look at it more carefully later.
